January 2010 The earth has music for those who listen. ~William Shakespeare
December 2009 I heard the bells on Christmas Day, their old, familiar carols play, and wild and sweet the words repeat of peace on earth, good-will to men! ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
What in the world?!
"WHO are THEY?", "WHAT is THAT?!", or "WHAT does THAT mean?" are common questions we are bound to face at some point on a day to day basis. Some are more shocking than others. After hearing someone say, "Aurora Borealis? Who's that?", I decided to highlight common terms, slang, or proverbs for those of us who genuinely just have no dang clue what is going on. :)
Expression #1: "A bird in hand is worth two in the bush" Something that one already has is better than going after something seemingly more worthwhile that one may not be able to get.
Expression #2: "Cold Turkey" The state addicts are in when withdrawing from drug use, especially heroin. In the state of drug withdrawal an addict's blood is directed to the internal organs, leaving the skin white and with goose bumps, thus resembling a frozen plucked turkey. This expression goes back to the 1930s.
Expression #3:
"Pushing Up the Daisies" If someone is said to be "pushing up the daisies", this means that they are dead.
